Y strainers have pressure ratings, so you should choose one that has a rating suitable for your system. Similarly, you should make sure the piping to which the strainer is to be connected is not at an angle or offset, to prevent undue stress on threads or flanges.
In a hot water system, a Y strainer is important because it traps any rust or scale circulating in the water. It should be installed immediately prior to the hot water circulating pump to prevent particulate matter from entering the impeller, or rotor, of the pump.
A Y strainer should be installed with one valve before and one valve after the strainer itself. This means the strainer can be serviced without draining the complete system.
